Foster Family Services

A single-family foster home is a viable option for many Individuals wanting and needing the close comfort of living with a caring family. OVRS’ Foster Care Services features families who open their hearts and homes to provide assistance with long-term placements, and short-term respite services.

The decision to live in a foster home rather than a more traditional congregate setting is made by the Individual in concert with his/her family, the referral agency, and the county board of MR/DD.

The selection of Foster Providers

All prospective foster care families are first screened to determine eligibility:

-    Self-supporting and willing to make a long-term commitment to provide a loving, clean, and safe home for someone with a disability;

-    Willing to complete a home-study, which includes a reference check, finger printing, home inspection, and other state requirements.

Additional training, specific to the Individual and trial visits to the home are conducted by the Foster Program Coordinator. A placement is made only when all training is complete and a comfort level has been established between the foster family and the Individual.

The Foster Coordinator’s team offers on-going support and training for foster care providers. This support includes regular home visits, assistance accessing services in the community, and active participation in community meetings that will facilitate the needed services of the Individual.

Currently, the OVRS foster care network includes more than 40 foster homes throughout Hamilton County.
