Origins and Principles

With a history of MR/DD service since 1973, Ohio Valley Residential Services (OVRS) is a private, non-profit community-centered organization that offers housing and personal supports both for children and adults-with mental retardation and associated mental and physical handicaps.  We offer residential living in small group home settings and/or supported living services. Every Individual residing in an OVRS site has his or her own bedroom - - because of OVRS' belief in the importance of all people having and needing private and personal space. 

It is OVRS' intent to provide Individuals with the best option to achieve a comfortable living setting, and to engage them in making important choices that affect their lives. 

A few of these choices include:

• Deciding where to live

• Where and how to enjoy leisure time

• With whom to associate

• What to eat

• How to dress

These are decisions and choices that society expects of any responsible, maturing citizen.  In addition, learning to accept the consequences of these decisions is an important Individual freedom and an expected part of personal growth.
