Initial training consists of the following topics, approximately 40 hours of study:

  • CPR/ First Aid

  • Medication Administration:

Universal Precautions

Urgent Situations

Signs and Symptoms to Observe and Report

Severe Allergic Reaction

Diastat

Transcription of Physician’s Orders

Documentation

Storage and Care of Medication

Medication Errors

Preparation of Medication Administration

Diabetes Mellitus

Review of Commonly use Medications in the MR/DD Setting

Health Related Activities

In class, simulated, return demonstration of Medication Admin.

 

Final Written Test

Individual specific training and return demonstration in client setting

 

Additional training for more specific indicators.

 

Non-medical Training

  • Safety and Emergency procedures in the home sites

 



 

 

  • Supports for Individuals:  The role of staff in program implementation

  • Vehicle Safety

  • Working with Families/ Guardians and Community Relations

  • Introduction to Mental Retardation/ Developmental disabilities

  • Ethics for the Direct Support Professional (Scenarios and discussion based on the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals code of Ethics)

  • Incident Reporting

  • Blood borne Pathogens Documentation and Records

  • Fire and Severe Weather Safety The Rights and responsibilities of persons
    Home Management

  • Role of the Direct Support Professional

On-going and Continuing Training throughout the year
